Sydney Metro Northwest

About The Sydney Metro Northwest

As part of the landmark Sydney Metro Northwest project, Next Generation Contractors supported key construction activities, including works at the Tallawong stabling yard and along the 4 km viaduct.

Our team contributed to the delivery and construction of the 270-metre curved cable-stayed railway bridge between Bella Vista and Rouse Hill, one of the project’s most complex structures.

Throughout the development of Sydney’s driverless train system, we provided crane trucks, dump trucks, and experienced operators to ensure efficient and reliable project delivery.

Other Projects We Have Delivered

Sydenham to Bankstown Metro (S2B)

2022

- Present

The T3 Sydenham to Bankstown upgrade is a major infrastructure project involving extensive track and station enhancements along the 13.5 km corridor.

Since early 2022, our fleet has been supporting the John Holland–Laing O’Rourke joint venture delivering this key stage of the Sydney Metro development. We provide a range of specialised equipment; including crane trucks, elevated work platforms, and dump trucks, along with experienced operators to ensure the project progresses safely and efficiently.

Lithgow Re-signalling Project

2024

- Present

The Lithgow Re-signalling Project involves upgrades to the yard and signalling systems, aimed at improving overall control and network reliability.

We have supported the project with a range of specialised equipment, including crane trucks, dump trucks, and first-aid site access vehicles. Our hi-rail crane truck has also been utilised to transport signalling materials directly into on-site tunnels, enabling efficient and safe delivery in restricted access areas.

Emergency Flood Response Katoomba

2022

Following unexpected flooding that damaged track infrastructure, our rapid response team mobilised equipment and operators within hours.

Our rail access vehicles proved highly versatile in the challenging conditions, while our hi-rail crane truck enabled the precise delivery of critical supplies to affected areas, supporting efficient and timely recovery efforts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Our equipment is purpose-built for railway environments, with modifications specifically designed to address the unique challenges of rail corridors. For example, our high-rail trucks feature retractable train wheels allowing them to operate on both road and rail, while our specialised dump trucks use balloon tyres that distribute weight properly on railway ballast to prevent track damage. These railway-specific features enable safer, more efficient operations within controlled rail work sites.

We understand the critical nature of railway possession windows and can typically mobilise equipment within 48 hours for standard requirements. For emergency response situations, we maintain ready teams and equipment that can deploy much faster. During your initial consultation, we’ll provide specific timeframes based on your project location and equipment requirements.

Unlike companies that “just throw anyone on” jobs, our operators undergo comprehensive railway-specific training, including track safety awareness, electrical hazards in rail corridors, and coordination with protection officers. We use a structured “buddy system” where new operators work alongside experienced team members for multiple shifts before operating independently. All operators maintain current rail corridor certifications and site-specific inductions.

Yes, we maintain sufficient backup equipment for critical components of our fleet. In railway work, where delays can cost millions in penalties, this redundancy is essential. Our equipment undergoes rigorous maintenance schedules to minimise the risk of breakdown, but should an issue occur, we can quickly deploy replacement equipment to ensure your project remains on schedule.

We primarily service the Sydney metropolitan area and surrounding regions where Sydney Trains operates railway infrastructure. We operate from two locations: our main yard in Llandilo and a secondary yard in Chullora associated with the rail depot. For projects outside these areas, we can discuss mobilisation requirements and timelines during your initial consultation.

We select operators based on both technical skills and their understanding of railway environments. New team members typically have prior experience in either heavy machinery operation or railway work. Our training includes a comprehensive onboarding process covering railway safety protocols, equipment operation, and emergency procedures. We also have a certified railway panel within our Llandilo yard for more comprehensive operator training, allowing hands-on experience in a controlled environment.

Safety isn’t a checkbox for us – it’s how we operate. We maintain comprehensive safety systems specifically designed for railway environments, including detailed protocols for electrical safety, track protection, and emergency response. Our operators undergo regular training and reassessments and hold VOC’s for all applicable plant operation. We conduct thorough equipment inspections before every deployment and all our vehicles are Metro approved. We stay current with Metro and Sydney Trains safety requirements through regular communication with safety officers and participation in industry safety forums.
